The 13 Colonies
The original thirteen colonies were Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island.
Prior to the American Revolution, these colonies were still under the rule of King George, III of the British government. However, each colony had a local government, whose leaders worked with the British government, also called Parliament.
Because England was so far away, the Colonists became very independent and did not rely on the help of British government. This independence and fact that the colonies were so far away from England, made it very difficult for King George to rule this land.
